Eric Steegstra (NL) Zwolle 1953
Involved with puppetry and film since his childhood.
Steegstra toured the country with performances for years; in theaters, schools, and at festivals.
“As a little boy, I saw a puppet show by Feike Boschma; I thought it was wonderful. His performance with old, tattered rags really captured my imagination.”
Besides puppetry, he developed an early interest in film. Especially the pioneering era, the earliest period of silent film.
“Magic lanterns, rattling projectors in the dark that projected such a flickering shadow play onto the wall, held a magical attraction for me.”
Steegstra makes films in which there is little to no dialogue; the images tell the story.
“I create a fictional world, a landscape in which things happen.”
The films have been sold to various television channels all over the world. The films have also been screened at many domestic and international film festivals. There are two Golden Calves for the best short film in the Netherlands and various awards have been won in France, Germany, and Italy.
